Water. Every part of the country has its own version of it, and none of them teach you what the last one did. That's not a résumé — it's an education you can only get by moving.
Florida · Push it
Nothing falls on its own down there. The table sits right under your feet and the land won't give you an inch of relief. You learn to push water exactly where it has to go on a tenth of a foot, and to check your datum twice before you trust it.
North Carolina · Slow it down
In the Blue Ridge the problem reverses. Water arrives with speed behind it, so the job is slowing it down — and building real retaining wall to flatten ground that never wanted to be flat.
Louisiana · Too much of it
Baton Rouge doesn't drain, it pumps and it levees. It's also where I learned survey properly, refitting a survey department off Civil 3D and onto Carlson Field to Finish — raw field codes through to a finished plat.
West Texas · Not enough
Out past Abilene the fight isn't drainage, it's supply. Town against town over the same water, and every line you draw is one somebody's attorney is going to read.
I've seen most of what the South can throw at a designer. Give me an engineer's direction and there isn't much we can't draw.

How a job runs
Civil has to be the only trade where waterfall is both a project methodology and a drainage feature. We run both meanings at once: the phases fall in order and the dates hold, while the tasks between them get juggled so nothing sits still.
Datum before boundary. Boundary before geometry. Geometry before sheets. No amount of agility saves a plan set built on the wrong benchmark, so the sequence gets locked at kickoff and isn't renegotiated at 60%.
A standing call keeps the decisions flowing. When the storm network is blocked waiting on a call from your side, that hour goes into detail sheets instead of into staring at a drawing waiting for the phone to ring.
DRAFTING NOTE: around here a hundred-year storm turns up about every four years.
